Create vibrant landscapes in soft pastels, a versatile, expansive, and expressive medium. This art medium has been in use for 100s of years, resulting in some of the greatest works from Degas, Manet, Chardin, Goetz, and many more. In recent years, it is seeing a resurgence as a tool of choice amongst recreational and professional artists alike, largely in part to the extensive range of colours and papers now available.

Be guided through demonstrations, short lectures, and one-on-one assistance to create your own masterpieces. Using photo references as well as plein air outings, you will experience the unique opportunities this medium provides.

A pastel begins with a solid drawing in light charcoal which allows you to freely develop layers of pastel over it, all blending and creating a rich tapestry of colour. We will also experiment with different paper surfaces, yielding different effects and creating a wider range of imagery and emotion.

Be bold, be subtle – there are many possibilities to explore!

David is an amazing colourist, and studying with him is a pleasure and a privilege. One of the most valuable (and challenging) things I have learned from him is the process of recognizing the most meaningful elements in the wide scope of a landscape – those things that, through colour, ignite and guide the composition of a painting to its ultimate success – an emotional connection with the viewer. That is my artistic goal, and David’s generous and encouraging manner of teaching has helped me overcome many hurdles in my journey as an artist. – Marnie Main, Edmonton, AB
