Is it possible to have a conversation with nature?

When we set up to paint outside we can take the time to notice that things are moving and changing before our eyes. Being here, immersed in colours, sounds and scents and through the reciprocity of looking and painting we connect with place, ourselves and each other.

In this workshop we enter the space of nature; the garden, forest and ocean and paint what we see. We will slow down, observe the textures and colours and make our mark on the canvas. This is a way to interact with the phenomenal world, take a break from the clamouring of the news, the internet and speed of daily life. Here we have time for the mind, taking ownership of our attention while we engage in a conversation with the more-than-human world through the contemplative act of painting.

Participants will be spending time outdoors walking, sometimes over rugged terrain. Please pack mindfully and consider bringing supportive footwear and email registration@hollyhock.ca for more information or for any accessibility related questions.

What You’ll Gain

  • Learn to share and explore techniques that will guide you throughout the entire painting process, with special attention to how to start and how to conclude your paintings.
  • Feedback, conversation, and sharing about our work and applied techniques. Group conversations will happen at the beginning of our time together, during the midpoint and before we part ways.

Who This Program is For

This workshop is open to new and experienced painters alike. We will aim to make 3 small paintings over 5 days.

Art Supplies

All participants will receive a detailed supply list upon registration.

Oil paint will be our main medium (because the waste is easier to manage), but acrylic or gauche can be used.

Testimonials

Jeremy was great at offering assistance and suggestions without being critical. Art is a vulnerable process, and I think he really allowed everyone to shine in their own way. -Past participant

[Jeremy] has a great approach to “teaching” that is inclusive and open ended that makes it accessible and welcoming to all skill levels. -Past participant
