Nature Paints Itself
With Jeremy Herndl
July 25 - 30, 2025
What if the world created us humans to speak its names, sing its rivers and winds? What if nature paints itself, using our deft human hands and the tactility of sight to emulate its textures, colours and spaces?
In this workshop we shall enter the space of nature, the garden, forest and ocean and paint what we see. We can slow down, observe the textures and colours and make our mark on the canvas. This is a way to interact with the phenomenal world, take a break from the clamouring of the news, the internet and speed of daily life. Here we have time for mind and take ownership of our attention while we engage in a conversation with the more-than-human world through the contemplative act of painting.
This workshop is open to new and experienced painters alike.
Program Highlights
- Aim to paint 5 small paintings, one per day
- Explore, learn and share techniques that will guide you throughout the entire painting process, with special attention to how to start and how to conclude your paintings
- Take time for sharing, feedback and conversation about our work and applied techniques, at the beginning of our time together, midpoint, and before we part ways
Art Supplies
- All participants will receive a detailed supply list upon registration.
Oil paint will be our main medium (because the waste is easier to manage), but acrylic or gauche can be used. Participants will be spending time outdoors walking, sometimes over rugged terrain. Please pack mindfully and consider bringing supportive footwear and email registration@hollyhock.ca for more information or for any accessibility related questions.
